He noted that the Ghanaian passport is empirically recognised as one of the most globally valuable, offering holders access to about 50 visa waivers across all continents. This, he said, reflects Ghana’s strong diplomatic relations and growing international standing.
In a historic shift aimed at improving access, passport application services are now available in all 16 regions of the country for the first time.
Processing times have also been significantly reduced, with applicants receiving their passports in less than 15 days. In addition, passports are now delivered via courier to applicants at no extra cost, regardless of location.
Affordability has also been prioritised. Despite transitioning from biometric to advanced chip-embedded passports and improving service delivery, passport fees have been reduced by 30 percent, from GHS500 to GHS350.
A same-day passport application and delivery service has also been introduced, marking a major milestone in public service efficiency.
Hon. Ablakwa further disclosed that the more than 40,000 backlog of undelivered passports inherited in 2025 has been fully cleared, restoring efficiency and public confidence in the system.
To further strengthen operations, investments in modern technology and artificial intelligence tools have been deployed to enhance security and streamline passport administration.
Looking ahead, he indicated that Ghana expects to conclude additional visa waiver agreements with friendly nations within the year, further expanding travel opportunities for citizens.
He assured Ghanaians that passport holders enjoy special privileges, including full protection and enhanced consular support from the Government of Ghana, reinforcing the passport not just as a travel document but as a symbol of national pride and global mobility.
