Former President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been appointed to lead the Commonwealth Observer Group for Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections and constitutional referendum.
The Commonwealth Secretariat announced the appointment as part of its commitment to promoting democratic governance, transparency, and credible electoral processes among member states.
As Chair of the Observer Group, the former Ghanaian leader will oversee the work of a team of observers drawn from across the Commonwealth, including election experts, civil society leaders, and former public officials.

The Observer Group is expected to assess the electoral and referendum processes in line with Bangladesh’s laws as well as Commonwealth democratic standards.
This includes monitoring the pre-election environment, voting, counting, and the announcement of results, as well as the overall conduct of stakeholders.
Nana Akufo-Addo brings extensive experience to the role, having served two terms as President of Ghana and previously holding key positions including Attorney-General and Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Ghana’s electoral credibility and peaceful democratic transitions during his tenure have earned him international recognition.
The Commonwealth Observer Group will engage with electoral authorities, political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies, and voters, and will issue an independent report outlining its findings and recommendations after the conclusion of the process.
Bangladesh’s elections and referendum are considered significant milestones in the country’s democratic journey, and the Commonwealth’s involvement is expected to strengthen public confidence in the outcome.
The appointment underscores Nana Akufo-Addo’s continued influence on the global stage and Ghana’s standing as a reference point for democratic governance within the Commonwealth.
