The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested twenty-two (22) Togolese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities within the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
The arrests were carried out on January 23, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by the Police. According to the Ghana Police Service, officers intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12, which was being driven by a suspect identified as Abdul Majeed Yakubu.
Upon interrogation, the occupants of the vehicle admitted that they were nationals of Togo and were en route to Tuntumba, a community known for illegal mining activities, with the intention of engaging in galamsey operations.

The suspects have since been placed in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service to undergo the necessary immigration and legal procedures in accordance with the law.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated that investigations into the case are ongoing and assured the public that further updates will be provided as developments unfold.
The Police also reaffirmed their commitment to combating illegal mining and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources, while working closely with relevant state agencies to address cross-border criminal activities.
