Boat travelling from Tolon to Daboya capsizes — Paddler missing, search underway

A boat travelling on the White Volta from Tamale to Daboya in the North Gonja District has capsized, according to officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has raised concern among residents who rely heavily on the river for transportation and trade.

Confirming the incident, the North Gonja District Director of NADMO, Abdul Rashid Yamusah, said that fortunately, there were no passengers on board at the time of the accident.

However, the paddler of the boat has not yet been found. Mr Yamusah explained that the cause of the capsize is not immediately known.

A rescue team from NADMO has since been deployed to the scene to search for the missing paddler and recover the boat.

According to Mr Yamusah, the team has been working tirelessly, combing the river and its banks for any signs of the missing person.

He assured the public that NADMO is coordinating closely with local authorities and community volunteers to ensure a swift and thorough search.

Residents of the area have expressed relief that no passengers were aboard when the incident occurred, but have also called for enhanced safety measures on the White Volta.

They are urging boat operators to wear life jackets, avoid overloading, and refrain from travelling during bad weather or poor visibility.

Some have also appealed for government support to improve river transport safety and provide better emergency response resources in the district.
NADMO has advised all river users to exercise extreme caution as water levels remain high following recent rains.

The organisation has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents living along the White Volta and pledged to continue monitoring the situation until the missing paddler is found.
