Work has commenced towards the establishment of a second state-of-the-art catheterisation laboratory at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), marking a major step in Ghana‘s efforts to expand advanced cardiac and neurological care.
The development follows a working visit by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund team to the hospital after earlier engagements in Kumasi.
The team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, management of TTH and ADB Ghana Medical Systems, inspected the project site to assess construction readiness and ensure timely delivery of the facility.

The catheterisation laboratory, a specialised unit for treating heart and blood vessel conditions without open surgery, is expected to significantly improve the management of heart attacks, strokes and complex cardiovascular cases.
When completed, it will strengthen emergency response in the Northern Sector and reduce pressure on southern referral hospitals.
Chairman of the Hospital Board, Dr. Simon Naporoo, described the intervention as unprecedented, noting that the hospital has waited nearly 50 years for such a facility.
He attributed the progress to the decisive leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and commended the Minister of Health and the hospital’s administration for their swift and action-oriented approach.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of the year, signalling what stakeholders describe as a turning point in addressing preventable deaths caused by the absence of critical cardiac facilities in the north.
