Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has dismissed reports suggesting that the hospital detains patients who are unable to pay their medical bills, describing such claims as misleading and inaccurate.
In a press release dated January 12, 2026, KATH stated categorically that it does not detain patients under any circumstances.
According to management, situations where patients remain at the hospital after being medically discharged are due solely to financial challenges faced by patients or their families in settling outstanding treatment costs, and not as a result of any form of coercion or detention by the hospital.

The hospital explained that during such extended stays, KATH continues to provide care and basic support, including meals, while efforts are made to resolve the financial issues.
Management also acknowledged the role played by benevolent individuals, corporate bodies, faith-based organisations, and other groups who periodically intervene to assist patients by paying off their medical bills.
KATH urged the media and the general public to avoid publishing or circulating information that misrepresents the hospital’s practices, warning that such reports could undermine public trust in the institution.
Reaffirming its commitment to ethical healthcare delivery, KATH emphasized that it remains dedicated to providing quality medical care with compassion, professionalism, and respect for the rights and dignity of all patients.
