The Northern Regional capital Tamale has witnessed a major security operation after a special task force deployed by the Inspector-General of Police stormed the metropolis. The deployment followed a series of petitions from civil society organisations, lecturers from the University for Development Studies (UDS), and religious leaders, all expressing deep concern over increasing incidents of lawlessness in the city.
Their letters, addressed to IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, highlighted rising criminal activity and called for stronger police intervention to restore public confidence and safety.
Led by ASP Bawa Abdul Jalil, the taskforce arrived with about 50 highly trained officers and eight service vehicles, including the well-known Black Maria used for transporting suspects. Their presence immediately signaled a coordinated effort to clamp down on criminal networks operating within the metropolis.

During their first major operation in the Central Business District, the officers apprehended about 50 suspects. Many of the individuals arrested were found in possession of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, along with other prohibited drugs believed to be fuelling the growing wave of misconduct in the metropolis.
Speaking to the media after the raid, ASP Bawa Abdul Jalil explained that the taskforce was deployed as part of a broader strategy by the Ghana Police Service to reclaim the city from criminal elements. He noted that the operation was intelligence-led and targeted hotspots that had been identified in reports submitted to the police.
According to him, the team acted swiftly and decisively to prevent further deterioration of the security situation, stressing that the arrests were only the first step in a long-term plan to ensure stability in Tamale.
ASP Jalil further assured the public that the special taskforce would continue to undertake a series of coordinated operations across Tamale in the coming days. He emphasized that the exercise would persist until all miscreants are flushed out of the metropolis and residents can once again go about their daily activities without fear.
The police have also encouraged community members to support their efforts by volunteering credible information that would assist in tracking down criminal gangs and ensuring lasting peace in the region.
