Tension Erupts Between Farmers and Hunters in Kullaa/Gbalahi Over Burnt Cowpea Farms

Tension has erupted between farmers and hunters in the Kullaa/Gbalahi in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region following the burning of cowpea farms, leaving several farmers counting heavy financial losses.

The incident, which has drawn public attention, has heightened anxiety within the farming community, as crop destruction threatens livelihoods in an area, where agriculture remains the main source of income.

Although no casualties were recorded, the situation nearly degenerated into violence when farmers confronted the hunters and demanded that they stop burning their farm produce.

A video of the confrontation has since gone viral on social media, showing agitated hunters resisting the farmers’ appeals. In the process, about four acres of cowpea farms were burnt to ashes, destroying months of hard work and investment.

The destruction of the farms has raised concerns about growing conflicts between farmers and other land users in the area. Farmers have expressed frustration over what they describe as repeated acts of destruction and are calling on authorities to intervene to prevent future occurrences.

They fear that if the situation is not properly addressed, it could escalate into a broader conflict with serious consequences for peace and food security.

Confirming the incident to our reporter, the Assemblyman for the Kullaa/Gbalahi Electoral Area, Mohammed Muniru, said calm has been restored following timely intervention.

He noted that residents have since returned to their normal daily activities and assured that steps are being taken to engage all parties involved to ensure lasting peace and protect the livelihoods of farmers in the community.
