Following the tragic death of Ghana‘s Defence Minister, the search for a permanent replacement has intensified, with Dr Zanetor Rawlings emerging as the leading contender to assume the critical portfolio.
The vacancy has temporarily been filled by the Finance Minister in an acting capacity, a stopgap arrangement widely viewed as unsustainable given the ministry’s strategic importance.
Dr Rawlings, whose candidacy has garnered significant attention, brings almost eight years of experience on Ghana’s parliamentary Defence Committee, serving in leadership roles alongside notable figures such as Ken Agyapong.

Analysts say her long-standing involvement in defence and security matters positions her as uniquely qualified to lead the ministry, with sources asserting she “clearly knows a thing or two and how to handle the ministry” and “can do extremely well” if appointed.
Her potential appointment would also mark a historic first: Ghana’s first female Defence Minister, a development observers suggest could signal a broader push for increased female representation in senior government roles.
While she remains the frontrunner, political insiders note that allegations of manoeuvring for public sympathy and internal party delegate influence have accompanied her rise.
Other potential candidates include Kennedy Agyapong, the current Minister for Works and Housing and a former Deputy Defence Minister during President Mahama’s first term, and a young former Deputy Defence Minister, Haruna, whose candidacy is backed by some party leaders as a promising alternative. Both are seen as viable competitors, reflecting the internal political considerations shaping the decision.
The selection is expected to be part of a larger cabinet reshuffle, with various party cadres and leaders lobbying for their preferred candidates. Sources indicate that President Mahama is weighing both experience and broader political dynamics, including calls for greater female leadership, before finalising the appointment.
As Ghana awaits the official announcement, attention remains firmly on Dr Rawlings’ historic candidacy, which could redefine the leadership landscape of the Ministry of Defence.
