Mfantsipim School, the reigning champions of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), has claimed the first slot at this year’s grand finale, demonstrating their determination to defend their title.
The Botwe-based school amassed 42 points in the first semi-final, outperforming Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) with 23 points and Mankranso SHS with 15 points.
The contest began with all three schools starting cautiously, much to the disappointment of quiz mistress Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann. Mfantsipim quickly pulled ahead in the first round, securing 17 points compared to GSTS’s seven and Mankranso’s six.

Round two saw modest gains, with Mankranso losing one point, GSTS earning five, and Mfantsipim adding a single point in the speed race.
The third round, featuring the “problem of the day,” tested the schools’ problem-solving skills, with Mfantsipim and GSTS scoring one point each, and Mankranso failing to earn any.
By the fourth round, Mfantsipim extended its lead to 32 points, leaving GSTS at 20 and Mankranso SHS at 15.
The reigning champions sealed their semi-final victory by correctly answering three out of four riddles in the final round, earning them a place at the grand finale and a strong opportunity to defend their title.
