Parliament on Thursday officially approved Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, in accordance with Article 114(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
The approval followed a marathon debate after the presentation of the Appointments Committee’s report by Mr Benard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Committee, which recommended the nominee’s approval by a majority decision.
During the debate, the Minority Caucus challenged the initial voice vote approving Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, prompting Speaker Alban Bagbin to order a headcount. The results showed 163 members in support of the nomination, while 69 opposed it.

In his presentation, Mr Ahiafor commended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for demonstrating exceptional competence, profound legal knowledge, and a strong grasp of judicial ethics during the vetting process.
He noted that the nominee responded to all questions with professionalism, clarity, intellectual rigour, and integrity befitting the highest court in the land.
Mr Ahiafor, who is also MP for Akatsi South, emphasised that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie possesses the requisite academic qualifications, judicial temperament, and ethical integrity to lead the judiciary and safeguard the independence of Ghana’s courts.
The Committee’s report concluded with a recommendation for Parliament to approve the nominee, paving the way for his formal appointment as Chief Justice.
The Minority Caucus, however, abstained from the vetting and rejected the nomination, citing legal and political concerns. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s vetting was held on Monday, November 10, 2025, marking the final step before Parliament’s approval.
