Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has held high-level discussions with a Vice President of Google at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom, focusing on how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to improve the quality of education in Ghana and across Africa.
The engagement builds on Google’s growing investment in Africa’s digital ecosystem. In July 2025, Google announced a US$37 million investment in AI research and digital skills development on the continent, including the establishment of a new AI Community Center in Accra.
This initiative forms part of Google’s broader US$1 billion commitment to Africa’s digital transformation and positions Ghana as a strategic hub for AI innovation.

Hon. Iddrisu highlighted ongoing collaborations between Google, the University of Ghana, and the GDI Hub to develop speech recognition and AI tools for Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ewe, and Dagbani.
These efforts are particularly focused on non-standard speech, with the aim of improving accessibility in education and digital services.
During the discussions, the Minister stressed the importance of expanding language inclusion by integrating Hausa, a widely spoken language across Ghana and West Africa.
He noted that incorporating Hausa into AI tools would enhance regional inclusion and further strengthen Ghana’s leadership role in Africa’s AI landscape.
Hon. Iddrisu also revealed that Google has given firm assurances that its education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis.
According to him, the tools will include curriculum-aligned educational content and resources on the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning, ensuring equitable access for learners regardless of location or socioeconomic background.
He concluded by reaffirming Ghana’s active role in the global AI space, stating that the country is not merely participating in the AI revolution but is helping to shape its direction for the benefit of Africa as a whole.
