The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has won the first-ever National Universities Climate Debate (NUCD), a youth-led initiative by Eco-Africa Network that brought together top university students across Ghana to present innovative ideas for tackling climate change.
The competition, held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at the Dr Daniel McKorley Moot Court of the GIMPA Law School, was themed “Driving Climate Action Through Policy, Innovation, and Equity.” It served as a platform for students to discuss renewable energy, sustainable development, and adaptation strategies in the face of climate change.
Kaleb Adane Frimpong, Deputy Board Chair of Eco-Africa Network, in his welcome remarks, described the debate as a defining moment for youth leadership in climate advocacy. “This initiative sharpens climate dialogue, it challenges ideas, strengthens arguments, and inspires solutions that are both bold and practical,” he said.

The teams debated key issues such as climate financing, adaptation policies, and the transition to clean energy.
Acting CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Mr Usman Ayariga, delivered the keynote address and praised Eco-Africa Network for empowering young people to influence climate and environmental policy. “Our collective future rests on the innovation and leadership of young people. Platforms like this spark the kind of thinking that drives progress,” he said.
He encouraged participants to view debating as a tool for civic engagement and national development, adding, “Debate shapes responsible citizens. Take it seriously, it’s not just for fun. The NYA is ready to support and collaborate on such impactful initiatives.”
The event received sponsorship from Nescafé, Didi Jollof, CESMA, Aldin Cycles, Mayekoo, and the GIMPA Law School.
After several intense rounds, Team KNUST emerged victorious, while the University of Ghana placed second.
Eco-Africa Network announced that the National Universities Climate Debate will be held annually and rotated among tertiary institutions nationwide to strengthen youth-led advocacy for sustainability and climate resilience.
“This is only the beginning,” said Mr Frimpong. “We’re building a movement of young thinkers who are ready to lead Ghana’s transition to a sustainable future.”
