The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has adopted a recommendation supporting Ghana‘s candidacy for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
The decision was taken at the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers held in Abuja on December 12, 2025.
The recommendation was signed in Abuja by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba on behalf of the Council, acting under Articles 10, 11 and 12 of the ECOWAS Revised Treaty, considered Ghana’s formal request for endorsement from Member States.

In its recommendation, the Council highlighted Ghana’s role as an important ECOWAS Member State and its contribution to the bloc’s international standing.
The Council further underscored the need for ECOWAS to safeguard and enhance its presence in regional and international organisations by supporting the candidacies of Member States and their nationals.
It stressed the importance of maintaining a united front to protect the collective interests of the Community, especially within strategic institutions such as the African Union.
With this unified position, the Council recommended that the Authority of Heads of State and Government adopt a declaration of support for Ghana’s bid.
