The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled the Apatrapahemaa following a prolonged lineage dispute that raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of her enstoolment.

The decision was taken at the Manhyia Palace after the Asante Traditional Council carefully examined petitions and evidence presented by the appropriate customary authorities and family representatives.

The matter centered on claims that the queenmother did not belong to the rightful royal lineage entitled to occupy the Apatrapa stool.

After hearing all parties, the Council concluded that the established customs and succession rules of the Apatrapa Traditional Area had been breached.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, exercising his constitutional authority as the overlord of Asanteman, subsequently ordered the destoolment to preserve the sanctity of the chieftaincy institution and uphold Asante customs and traditions.

The Asantehene emphasized that chieftaincy is rooted in lineage, history, and strict customary procedures, and any deviation undermines traditional authority and social harmony.

He cautioned kingmakers and traditional elders against actions that could bring confusion and conflict into the chieftaincy system.

The destoolment brings to an end the Apatrapahemaa’s tenure and clears the way for the appropriate royal family to initiate processes to nominate a qualified candidate in accordance with tradition.

The Manhyia Palace has urged residents of the Apatrapa Traditional Area to remain calm and allow customary processes to proceed without tension, stressing that peace and unity remain paramount as the matter is resolved.
