The Indian community in Ghana, in collaboration with Ghanaian philanthropists, has sponsored the installation of solar streetlights in several rural communities across the country as part of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights.
The initiative, spearheaded by IPMC Chairman Amar Deep Singh Hari, received significant backing from local businesses, including Nankani & Hagan, M&G Pharmaceuticals, Kane-Em Industries, DPS Group, Poly Group, Link@, Moti Mahal Restaurant, RSKC Foundation, and Tropical Cables.
Beneficiary communities include Dondoli, Kumbienhe, and Kabanya in Central Wa; Brada and Tornu in North Dayi; Kusele, Vapour, Tuopare, Puffien, and Ketuo in Nandom; as well as several areas in the South Tongu constituency. Each community received fully equipped solar streetlight systems comprising poles, mounting brackets, 300-watt LED solar lights, batteries, and remote controls.

According to Mr Hari, the first phase targets 500 villages at an estimated cost of ₵7.5 million, aimed at enhancing safety, stimulating economic activities, and supporting night-time learning.
“The Diwali festival celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. By providing these solar streetlights, we are not only banishing darkness but also helping to stimulate local economies and improve living standards,” Mr Hari said.
He expressed appreciation to both the Indian community and their Ghanaian partners for supporting the project and encouraged more individuals and organisations to participate.
Member of Parliament for Nandom, Mr Richard Kuuire, praised IPMC and its partners for their commitment to community development, urging other philanthropists to emulate the gesture.
Similarly, Mr Maxwell Lukutor, MP for South Tongu, noted that the project had brought significant relief to rural residents. “Their lives no longer come to a standstill at sunset. Now they can work, study, and socialise even at night,” he said.
