Mr Isaac Badu Amponsah, Bono Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has commended the government for clearing the National Health Insurance Scheme’s (NHIS) claims owed to service providers from January to August this year.
He said the payment has made the scheme’s operations more effective and efficient across the region, adding, “Presently we don’t owe any service provider in the region.”
He made the remarks during a sensitisation campaign in Sunyani on the “NHIS Storm Project,” an initiative aimed at expanding public awareness and encouraging registration and renewal of NHIS membership.

Before the campaign, the Authority organised a street procession through the regional capital, culminating at the Nana Bosoma Central Market, where traders and market women were engaged on the benefits of the scheme.
Mr Amponsah also raised concerns about the illegal practice of co-payment by some health facilities and advised clients to report any such incidents to the nearest NHIA office.
He stressed that it is unlawful for NHIS-accredited service providers to charge additional medical fees, warning that offenders would face prosecution.
He further explained that the government’s introduction of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is intended to strengthen the NHIS, and urged individuals without a National Identification card to register for one, as it is required to access the fund.
As part of the outreach, the Authority registered new members on-site. After completing his registration, trader Nuru Abul praised the NHIA for making the process more convenient for first-time applicants.
