The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has begun an intensive refuse evacuation exercise in selected parts of the metropolis, including Asem, Ohwim, and communities around the Prempeh I International Airport, as part of measures to improve sanitation and protect public health.
According to the Assembly, the exercise was necessitated by indiscriminate dumping at unauthorised sites, largely driven by increased human activity in surrounding areas.
In the airport enclave, improper waste disposal had attracted large numbers of birds, particularly crows, raising safety concerns for aviation operations and nearby communities.

The ongoing evacuation aims to restore cleanliness, reduce environmental health risks, and curb bird activity around the airport.
As part of the intervention, residents of the Asem Electoral Area have been directed to use newly provided refuse containers following the closure of the former dumping site. Similar containers will also be supplied to residents of Ohwim to promote proper waste disposal.
The KMA has urged all residents to dispose of refuse only at designated collection points, stressing that sanitation is a shared responsibility. The Assembly called on the public to cooperate fully to help keep Kumasi clean, safe, and healthy for all.
