The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has confirmed that one of its personnel was shot during a routine anti-galamsey operation in the Bono Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
According to a statement signed by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Media Relations Officer of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the incident occurred in a bush along the Subinkurom-Kyeremasu stretch in the Dormaa Central Municipality, where armed assailants reportedly opened fire on the NAIMOS task force upon sighting them, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the confrontation, one NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. The injured personnel was immediately rushed to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital at Ampenkuro, where he is currently responding to treatment.

The statement further disclosed that one of the armed assailants, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was shot during the exchange. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital.
Despite the attack, NAIMOS reaffirmed its commitment to the fight against illegal mining, stressing that such incidents will not deter its mandate to protect Ghana‘s natural resources.
The Secretariat also called on stakeholders and the general public to continue supporting efforts to combat galamsey.
