Cabinet approves major funding for Ghana Buffer Stock Company to buy surplus farm produce amid fears of food glut

Cabinet has approved substantial funding for the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to purchase surplus farm produce from Ghanaian farmers, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced.

The intervention follows growing pressure from lawmakers and agricultural stakeholders concerned about a potential food glut and its economic impact on farmers.

Mr Ayariga made the announcement in Parliament while responding to a call by Nureedin Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Nalerigu Gambaga, who urged the Minister of Food and Agriculture to brief the House next week on measures being taken to avert a looming glut in the food supply chain.

Mr Mohammed had warned of post-harvest losses and economic hardship for farmers due to unsold produce, especially maize and rice.

In response, the Majority Leader said the Cabinet had already taken proactive steps to protect farmers from the consequences of overproduction.

“Funds have been approved to empower Ghana Buffer Stock to purchase excess grains and other farm produce, ensuring that farmers are supported and food reserves are strengthened,” Mr Ayariga stated.

The approved funds will enable NAFCO to absorb surplus maize and rice from the market, including carry-over stocks from previous seasons. The move aims to mitigate post-harvest losses, stabilise the agricultural economy, and maintain stable food prices.

The intervention is expected to reduce wastage by providing immediate market access for farmers, strengthen national food security through improved strategic reserves, and help control inflation driven by oversupply.

Farmers across the country have welcomed the announcement, expressing relief that their produce will not go to waste. Agricultural advocacy groups have also commended the government’s responsiveness, describing the measure as vital to sustaining the progress of Ghana’s agricultural transformation.

As Parliament awaits a formal briefing from the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Ayariga assured members that the government remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of farmers and ensuring that the bumper harvest contributes to national prosperity.
