Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Watara, the Ashanti Regional Head of the Wangara community, has been appointed a member of the Ghana Hajj Board, a recognition of his enduring commitment, humility, and leadership within the Muslim community.
The appointment underscores his influence in fostering religious harmony and community development in the Ashanti Region, where the Wangara people have historically played a vital role in the spread of Islam and trade across Ghana.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, Alhaji Watara said the appointment was both an honour and a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the organisation and coordination of Hajj activities in Ghana.

He described his inclusion on the Board as “a reflection of the confidence reposed in me to help ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience for Ghanaian Muslims.”
The Wangara community, known for establishing historic trading colonies across northern Ghana and along the Volta River, has significantly influenced the social and economic fabric of the Asante kingdom through commerce and cultural exchange.
Alhaji Watara said his years of service and dedication to the welfare of others had earned him respect from both local and national leaders, including President John Dramani Mahama, whom he thanked for the appointment.
He assured that his tenure would focus on improving the efficiency, transparency, and spiritual depth of Ghana’s Hajj operations, pledging to “make the pilgrimage not only smooth but deeply enriching for all participants.”
Alhaji Watara will serve on the Ghana Hajj Board until 2028, a period during which he plans to introduce innovative strategies to enhance the management and overall experience of the annual pilgrimage for Ghanaian Muslims.
