Mr George Sarpong, former Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission (NMC), has called on media professionals and journalists to prioritise personal safety while pursuing truthful reporting.
Speaking at a training workshop organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the ECOWAS Peace and Security Project (EPSG) in Tamale, he emphasised that ethical journalism requires risk awareness, not recklessness, and that finding alternative ways to report is a strategic measure to ensure continued public service.
Mr Sarpong also highlighted the dangers of hate speech and misinformation, warning that unchecked false narratives and divisive rhetoric threaten democratic discourse and national unity. He stressed that such practices erode public trust and weaken the foundations of democracy.
