Firefighters mounted a swift, coordinated response on Friday night, December 19, 2025, to contain a dangerous blaze that threatened a densely populated section of La Olympio Abafum, preventing what authorities say could have become a devastating Christmas tragedy.
The fire broke out at about 7:28 p.m., rapidly engulfing a cluster of wooden structures and sending thick plumes of smoke across the community.
The situation was complicated by severe accessibility challenges, as narrow alleys and makeshift buildings slowed the movement of emergency vehicles in the area.

A first response team from the Trade Fair Fire Station, led by Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Matthew Y. Quaye, arrived within minutes to confront what the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) described as a fully developed fire. In settlements like Abafum, where wooden structures dominate, fires can spread within seconds, making early intervention critical.
Reinforcements soon arrived in the form of two heavy-duty fire tenders from the Military Fire Unit and the Parliament Fire Station, strengthening efforts to contain the inferno.
The GNFS described the deployment as a clear demonstration of proactive inter-agency coordination.
As firefighters battled the flames, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) swiftly isolated power to the area, a decisive move aimed at eliminating the risk posed by exposed and sagging live wires common in high-density communities. At the same time, officers from the Ghana Police Service secured the perimeter, controlling crowds and ensuring emergency crews could operate without obstruction.
According to the GNFS, four single rooms and their contents were destroyed, but several adjoining residential buildings were successfully saved. Most notably, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
The outcome stood out sharply against a troubling national backdrop. Ghana has recorded a 33 percent increase in fire-related injuries this year, making the zero-casualty result in Abafum a significant operational success for the Fire Service.
GNFS leadership commended Lima Wun, supporting officers, and all partner agencies involved, praising their professionalism, coordination and swift operational support in bringing the incident under control.
