Safe Water Network Ghana (SWN) has joined the global community in observing World Toilet Day 2025, urging renewed commitment to expand access to safe toilets and improve sanitation across the country.
Marked under the theme “We’ll Always Need the Toilet,” this year’s commemoration highlighted the urgent need to protect and invest in sanitation systems as communities grapple with population growth, infrastructure gaps, and climate-related pressures.
In a statement issued in Accra, SWN emphasised that sanitation is an essential human need, not a privilege. Despite progress over the years, many households and institutions in Ghana still face challenges in accessing clean and reliable sanitation services, largely due to limited water supply.

The organisation said its work to provide safe, affordable, and reliable water services was helping bridge this sanitation gap, particularly in underserved communities.
SWN reported that it has extended piped water connections to over 15,000 households, schools, clinics, and small businesses nationwide, reaching more than 600,000 people.
These improved water systems, the organisation noted, are enabling communities to maintain cleaner environments, strengthen public health, and enhance resilience against climate-related challenges.
Mr Charles Nimako, Country Director of SWN Ghana, stressed that safe water and sanitation are inseparable, and that every new piped connection brings the country closer to a future where every household and institution can maintain clean, dignified, and sustainable sanitation.
He reaffirmed SWN’s commitment to collaborating with government, private sector partners, and local communities to accelerate national efforts toward universal access to safe water and sanitation.
Mr Nimako also called for sustained collaboration and investment to ensure all Ghanaians enjoy clean, safe, and dignified sanitation services. He expressed gratitude to the organisation’s partners, including the Government of Ghana, Stone Family Foundation, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, One Foundation, Helmsley Charitable Trust, and Uptime Global, for their ongoing support in advancing water and sanitation outcomes.
