Mr Mustapha Mershark, Unit Committee Chairman of the Baakoniaba Electoral Area in the Sunyani Municipality, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to extend the payment of allowances currently given to assembly members to also benefit unit committee members.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Mershark praised the President for fulfilling his 2024 Election promise of paying allowances to assembly members, describing the initiative as inspiring and motivating.
He argued that unit committee members, who play a critical role in local governance and community engagement, should also receive similar support to boost their morale and effectiveness.

“The allowance would not only motivate members to work hard but also inspire them to mobilise constituents for community development,” he said.
Mr Mershark, who also serves as the Manager of Nobles College and Great Mammersh Preparatory School, emphasised that extending the allowance to unit committees would encourage greater participation in identifying and addressing emerging development needs at the grassroots level.
He stressed that accelerated development is a collective responsibility, noting that the government alone cannot shoulder the task of ensuring sustainable progress.
Citing his personal contributions, he said he had funded the construction of toilet facilities in Jinijini and Owukorm farming communities, urging all Ghanaians to contribute their quota towards the development of their respective communities.
He also underscored that peace and unity remain prerequisites for development, calling on citizens to set aside political differences and support the government’s Reset Ghana agenda.
Mr Mershark’s appeal highlights the need to empower grassroots structures to strengthen local governance and foster inclusive community development.
