The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA), in partnership with the municipal office of the Social Welfare Department, has disbursed its first 2025 disability fund to 10 persons with disabilities, allocating a total of GH¢53,180 in cash and essential business items, including deep freezers.
This latest support marks the 11th disbursement since the assembly was separated from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly. The beneficiaries, eight children and two adults, were drawn from Boteyman, Lashibi, Spintex, Adjei Kojo, Baatsonaa, Kanewu and Solomon City.
Presenting the cash and items, Municipal Chief Executive Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh revealed that the assembly had received 487 applications, out of which 242 persons had been supported through various interventions over the years. He noted that the cumulative allocation from 2018 to 2025 now stands at GH¢611,192.

Mr Totimeh explained that the disability fund constitutes three per cent of the District Assembly Common Fund, emphasising that the disbursements reflect the assembly’s commitment to improving the social and economic well-being of persons with special needs.
He added that, as part of the government’s resetting agenda to enhance self-reliance among persons with disabilities, the allocation has been increased from three per cent to five per cent.
He encouraged beneficiaries to put the funds and items to productive use, warning that misuse without accountability could jeopardise future support opportunities for both current and prospective applicants.
Mr Charles Nartei, Chairman for persons with special abilities in Tema West, noted that many individuals had benefited from the scheme, adding that all applicants go through a vetting process before final selections are made.
