The Government of Ghana remains committed to improving infrastructure, logistics, and welfare for personnel and inmates in the nation’s prisons, Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboa, Bono Regional Minister, has affirmed. He highlighted that expanded employable skills development programmes and increased daily feeding allowances, from GHS 1.80 to GHS 5.00, demonstrate this commitment.
Mr Akwaboa made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf during the celebration of the “Think Prisons 360 Degrees” initiative in Sunyani. The event saw a street procession by the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Command of the Ghana Prisons Service, followed by the launch of an inter-stations sports festival involving Yeji, Duayaw-Nkwanta, Kenyasi, and Sunyani Central Prisons.
He stressed that prisons should function as reformation centres, not warehouses for offenders, noting that humane, efficient, and well-resourced correctional facilities enhance community safety and social justice. Mr Akwaboa urged public support for inmate rehabilitation and called for partnerships with corporate bodies and institutions to improve training, infrastructure, and employable skills development for the service.

He further encouraged prison personnel to uphold discipline, professionalism, human dignity, and integrity, emphasising that only through collective action can the correctional system truly reform, restore, and reintegrate inmates.
Deputy Director of Prisons Thomas Otsokpo, Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Commander, echoed the call for collaboration, stating that partnerships could expand the initiative and create a more transformative correctional system.
