The Aburaso community along the Bechem-Kumasi highway was thrown into mourning on Tuesday afternoon, October 28, after a heavy-duty truck loaded with lumber lost control and killed a pupil on the spot.
The Ghana News Agency gathered that the deceased, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was returning home from school with two other pupils when the incident occurred around 1400 hours. The two surviving children reportedly sustained severe injuries and are in critical condition.
According to an eyewitness, Mr Evans Owusu, the driver of the truck, with registration number GE 9901-11, lost control of the vehicle, causing the lumber to fall from the bucket and trap the children beneath.

He said some young men in the area quickly mobilised to rescue the victims but discovered that one of the children had already died. The other two were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Mr Owusu added that the accident caused a major traffic gridlock as the truck blocked the Aburaso section of the highway, leaving many vehicles stranded in both directions.
He further noted that the driver of the truck and his mate escaped unhurt and fled the scene.
