The Minister of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to Ghana‘s request for further engagement over the death of Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia, in Latvia.
According to the Minister, Latvian authorities have indicated their readiness to receive a Ghanaian delegation in Riga on January 20, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to pursue truth and justice in the matter.
He said the visit forms part of continued investigations into the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei’s death and assured that regular updates would be provided in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice.

The Minister reiterated that the Mahama administration places high value on the lives and dignity of all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, and will take all necessary steps to protect them.
The development follows a petition submitted by the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, calling for deeper intervention into the case. The family raised concerns over what they described as serious lapses in investigations conducted by Latvian police.
In the petition, the family criticised the early conclusion that the deceased committed suicide, citing the absence of forensic evidence, lack of photographic documentation, and failure to interrogate key suspects. They also questioned whether CCTV footage from the scene was reviewed.
The family further pointed to inconsistencies between the police account and the condition of Nana Agyei’s body, noting that he was reportedly fully clothed with no broken bones, despite claims that he fell from a sixth-floor window.
They also referenced a voice message sent by Nana Agyei before his death, in which he said he had been given a drink by two Latvian acquaintances before collapsing and being hospitalised.
Medical records, according to the family, confirmed poisoning, yet the suspects mentioned by the deceased were later released.
The family is calling on the Government of Ghana to use diplomatic channels to ensure the case is reopened and subjected to a thorough, independent and impartial investigation.
