According to the statement, unresolved political realities over the years have contributed to tension, violence and loss of life in the region. The Council said Somaliland’s recognition shows that bold and pragmatic decisions, rather than prolonged rhetoric, are needed to achieve lasting stability
The Western Togoland Governing Council called on the African Union and the wider international community to recognise the development as a constructive step and to engage honestly with the realities on the ground.
The statement stressed that peace cannot be achieved by repeating failed approaches, but requires vision, courage and a willingness to pursue new paths.
It further noted that the recognition of Somaliland should not be viewed as a source of division, but as an opportunity for peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and regional progress.
The Council urged all parties involved to act responsibly to safeguard and strengthen gains made towards peace.
