Mr Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager for MTN Ghana‘s Northern Business District, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, announcing that its newly introduced biodegradable SIM cards are designed to significantly reduce plastic waste.
Speaking at the 2025 MTN Ghana media and stakeholder forum in Sunyani, he said the initiative formed part of MTN’s long-term sustainability agenda, adding that plastic waste remained a global concern because of its non-biodegradable nature.
He explained that the new SIM cards were produced from forest-certified biodegradable materials that break down safely and more quickly than traditional plastics.

According to him, the innovation cuts down the company’s plastic footprint without compromising functionality, noting that the new cards maintain the same performance standards as existing SIM cards.
He added that MTN planned to push its environmental agenda further with the rollout of e-SIMs, which eliminate the need for physical cards altogether.
Mr Mingle warned that unmanaged plastics could pollute the environment and eventually enter the food chain, posing health risks, stressing that MTN’s environmental initiatives were therefore essential and intentional.
Mrs Jemima Kotei Walsh, Chief Customer Experience Officer at MTN Ghana, disclosed that the company had invested more than $1 billion in strengthening Ghana’s digital infrastructure over the past five years.
In 2025 alone, she said MTN had injected $240 million toward expanding fibre connectivity, as well as 4G and 5G services.
She described these investments as critical digital rails that supported national development, adding that MTN remained focused on improving accessibility and digital inclusion for all customers.
Mrs Walsh indicated that the company would continue decentralising customer support through digital self-service options, enhancing response times, and ensuring seamless engagement anytime and anywhere.
