Parliamentary committee inspects major sports stadia in Accra, flags operational and infrastructure challenges

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports has conducted an inspection tour of key sports facilities in the Greater Accra Region as part of its oversight and monitoring responsibilities.

The exercise, led by the Committee’s Chairman, Hon. Henry Ernest Norgbey, covered the Borteyman Sports Complex, the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, and the Accra Sports Stadium, with the aim of assessing their operational status, management practices and infrastructure conditions.

At the Borteyman Sports Complex, the Committee identified several critical challenges affecting the effective use of the facility.

These included the absence of electricity due to unpaid utility arrears, limited sporting activities as a result of few hosted events, weak management and maintenance systems, and concerns about the underground drainage infrastructure beneath the pitch.

The Committee then proceeded to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where management officials briefed members on the facility’s operations.

Challenges outlined included structural defects, the high cost of replacing damaged equipment, inadequate maintenance tools, and stakeholder interference, all of which continue to constrain efficient facility management.

The monitoring exercise concluded at the Accra Sports Stadium, which is currently undergoing maintenance works.

The Committee observed a number of persistent issues, including faulty water systems, defective floodlights, a malfunctioning scoreboard, and washroom facilities deemed unsuitable for a national sports venue.

Despite the challenges identified, the Committee commended the management of the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium for their efforts to keep their facilities operational under difficult circumstances.

Hon. Norgbey assured management and stakeholders that the Committee would formally engage the Ministry of Sports to address the concerns raised during the inspection, stressing the need for sustained investment, improved maintenance regimes and stronger management structures to safeguard Ghana’s sports infrastructure.
